چکیده

The authors report the formation of various submicron wrinkle patterns and their transition from onedimensional (1D) ripples to two-dimensional (2D) herringbone structures on poly(dimethylsiloxane) films. Using mechanical force they can separately control the amount and timing of strain applied to the substrate on both planar directions (either simultaneously or sequentially), which appears to be critical to maneuver the pattern formation in real time. They demonstrate reversible transitions from flat to 1D ripple, to ripple with bifurcation, to ripple/herringbone mixed features, and to well-controlled formation of a highly ordered zigzagbased 2D herringbone structures.

A family of herringbone patterns in thin films

Upon cooling, a thin metal film deposited on compliant elastomer substrate undergoes equi-biaxial compression and begins to buckle at a critical stress. As further cooling occurs, a highly ordered herringbone pattern self-assembles. The preference for the herringbone pattern over other potential modes is demonstrated based on minimum energy arguments. Control of the pre-buckling in-plane stress...

Design of Ordered Wrinkled Patterns with Dynamically Tuned Properties

The formation of patterned surfaces is a common tool to engineer materials. The capability to design and reproduce detailed features is a key factor to fulfill requirements for functional surfaces. Generation of wrinkles via buckling of a stiff film on a compliant surface is an inexpensive, easy and reliable method to yield a patterned surface. The wrinkling method has been exploited in a wide ...

Development of fibroblast-seeded collagen gels under planar biaxial mechanical constraints: a biomechanical study.

Prior studies indicated that mechanical loading influences cell turnover and matrix remodeling in tissues, suggesting that mechanical stimuli can play an active role in engineering artificial tissues. While most tissue culture studies focus on influence of uniaxial loading or constraints, effects of multi-axial loading or constraints on tissue development are far from clear. In this study, we e...

Mechanical Buckling Analysis of Composite Annular Sector Plate with Bean-Shaped Cut-Out using Three Dimensional Finite Element Method

In this paper, mechanical buckling analysis of composite annular sector plates with bean shape cut out is studied. Composite material sector plate made of Glass-Epoxy and Graphite-Epoxy with eight layers with same thickness but different fiber angles for each layer. Mechanical loading to form of uniform pressure loading in radial, environmental and biaxial directions is assumed. The method used...

An analytical study of two-dimensional buckling of thin films on compliant substrates

A stiff thin film on a heated compliant substrate may buckle when the system is cooled due to the thermal expansion mismatch between the film and substrate. Highly ordered and disordered herringbone patterns wavy structures then emerge as the system continues to cool. We have established an analytic approach to study one-dimensional, checkerboard, and ordered herringbone buckling patterns. The ...
